The Yuva Ekta Summer Program,
2007 provides a platform to young people from
diverse backgrounds to interact with each other
and to ideate on a number of socially relevant
issues ranging from corruption and vigilant citizenship
to education and environment.
A group of 15 students from various schools,
colleges and non-profit organizations have come
together for a period of 1 month to work with
and learn from each other. The program commenced
with a 3-day 'Self Empowerment' workshop, wherein
the participants undertook activities that enabled
them to get to know each other as well as to get
in touch with their 'inner selves'.
This was followed by a 'City Walk' organized
by Salaam Baalak Trust (an NGO that works
with destitute children), where students from
the Trust guided the volunteers through the New
Delhi Railway Station and recalled their harrowing
experiences of living there. The objective was
to give the volunteers a glimpse of the way in
which millions of children live in this country.
Twice a week the volunteers spend time at various
children's shelter homes across Delhi and engage
them in fun learning, arts and craft, games, music
and so on. The students gather on the other days
to work on a street play, which will be presented
on the 14th of June in Central Park, Conaught
Place, New Delhi.
The play presents the volunteers' insights into
some of the major problems facing our society
today and focuses on the importance of education,
civic sense and awareness in dealing with these
problems. |
